Chapter Twenty-Four

I hated those words. Something bad was coming, even worse than what had already happened. I joined him on the couch, resisting the urge to lean toward him.

“Before you say anything else, please, are you all right?” I heard the hesitancy in my voice, the fear lacing my words, but I didn’t try to hide it. I needed to know that he wasn’t hurt. Leaving Cal and Moose behind was something I was struggling to forgive myself for, even if I hadn’t been given a choice in the moment.

The smile he gave me was small and tired, but it was still a smile. “I’m okay. Sore, a little bloody, but nothing that won’t heal with a little rest.”

The breath I’d been holding as I waited for his answer rushed out and relief swelled within me. “Hells, you and Moose had me worried, Cal.”

“I know,” he said, swiping his hand over his face, smearing the dirt and ash that coated his skin. “But we have to talk about what happened back there.”

“My dad,” I said, stopping myself and taking a deep breath before I continued. “Is he . . .?” Fear bloomed in my throat, choking the rest of my words.

The look Cal gave me was sad. “Angus is,” he swallowed, looking down at the floor as he leaned forward, propping his elbows on his knees and dropping his head into his hands. “Angus is gone.”

Cold flashed through me as I processed what he’d said, not wanting it to be true. “Gone? How can he be gone?” Tears welled and spilled out of my eyes, and I wrapped my arms tight around my middle, trying to stave off the shivers I could feel building. Reality was crashing down around me. In one night, one sudden painful moment, I’d lost both my parents. I was alone.

A flash of warmth spread through me and I looked up in surprise. Cal’s hand was resting on my knee and I could feel waves of comfort radiating from him. “What are you doing?” I gasped the question.

“You’re hurting. I can feel it.” He moved his hand from my leg to his chest. “I can feel it in here. I only want to help you.”

“How?” I asked. When he didn’t answer, the realization speared through me as the warmth from his touch faded and I ached for it to return. “A Bond. Oh no. You bound yourself to me back there.”

“Seemed like a good idea at the time.” He shrugged and gave me a grin. “I had to get you out of there, and I couldn’t let Angus keep me from you. So, here we are.”

Another Bond. Another life tied to mine. A sob broke loose in my chest as I tried to find somehow to explain this away. “Can you dissolve it? Reverse it somehow?” I sounded crazy, my words piling on top of each other, but I was scrambling. Then hope rose. If he knew how to create a bond between us, maybe he had learned how to fix the accidental one that had trapped Torren in this life.
